In 1960 Newport were hoping to retain their title at Cardiff. The team was Richie Wills, Jackie Hurrell, Brian Jones, Billy Watkins (backs) and Brian Cresswell, Bryn Meredith and Geoff Whitson (forwards). Injured scrum-half John Anderson was replaced by Billy Watkins after the 2nd round. Newport were obviously not firing on all cylinders as they struggled past Maesteg in the 1st round thanks to tries by John Anderson (2) and Jackie Hurrell. They then beat Pontypool in the 2nd round to meet Penarth in the semi-final.
A 7th consecutive final beckoned but Newport came completely unstuck as Penarth romped home 20-5 with that shrewd scrum-half Bernard “Slogger” Templeman calling many of the shots. So for the first time since the tournament began there was a final without Newport playing. This time it was Llanelly captained by former Newport player D O Brace, who just got home 14-10 against Penarth.
The clubs involved were very appreciative of the profits they shared from this tournament which amounted to approx £100 for each club.
