Mark Ring became the 6th Cardiff player to win the Everson Award. Newport just beat Glamorgan Wanderers 7-6 and then won comfortably against Ebbw Vale and Pont ypridd to play Newbridge in the S/F where they won through to the final 12-4.
In the final Adrian Hadley and Tony Cordle scored before Newport knew what had happened but Chris Wood hit back with a try before Julian O’Brien completed his hat-trick in just 3 minutes. Hadley added a try with Chris Williams and Mike Lewis crossing for Newport. Richie Collins of Newport was the outstanding forward of the tournament.
