In 1989 Newport beat Tredegar 18-6 in the first round to play Cardiff in the Round 2 and with the help of two tries by outstanding young forward Ian McKim they won 22-6. They then lost to the eventual Snelling winners Swansea in the S/F. In the other S/F, Bridgend beat Llanelli 22-12.
The final was won by Swansea who had previously won the trophy 7 years ago. It was one of the closest fought finals for some time and Swansea edged home 22-16 with Wales wing Mark Titley playing at fly-half winning the Everson trophy.
